{"id":460,"date":"2011-02-20T13:08:01","date_gmt":"2011-02-20T20:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.conlang.org\/blog\/?p=460"},"modified":"2011-02-20T13:08:01","modified_gmt":"2011-02-20T20:08:01","slug":"overdue-posting-a-great-day-in-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.conlang.org\/blog\/?p=460","title":{"rendered":"Overdue Posting&#8230; A Great Day in San Diego!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sylvia Sotomayor, David Peterson, John Quijada in San Diego\" src=\"\/SylviaDavidJohn.jpg\" title=\"Three Conlangers out on the town\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/>Waay back in January, I was in San Diego for the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting (as part of my job, not as The Conlanging Librarian). Being rarely in California, I took the chance to contact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dedalvs.com\/\">David Peterson<\/a> and ask if he wanted to get together on Sunday afternoon. Well, the &#8220;event&#8221; took on a life of its own and, before I knew it, <a href=\"http:\/\/podcast.conlang.org\/2009\/02\/lcs-podcast-interview-with-sylvia-sotomayor\/\">Sylvia Sotomayor<\/a> was coming along and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ithkuil.net\/\">John Quijada<\/a> was flying in for the day from northern California. I hadn&#8217;t seen any of them since <a href=\"http:\/\/conference.conlang.org\/lcc2\/\">LCC2<\/a> back in 2007, so I was very excited to get to hang out with my conlanging brethren and sistren.<\/p>\n<p>Having some official work-related duties on Sunday morning, I met up with them near the marina behind the convention center for lunch. Using the wonders of modern technology, we triangulated and coordinated and finally met for hugs and handshakes all around. We all piled into David&#8217;s natural-gas-powered automobile and headed over to Old Town for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldtownmexcafe.com\/\">lunch<\/a>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pozole\">pozole<\/a> was great!<\/p>\n<p>After lunch we traveled to the Gaslamp District in San Diego proper and walked around, had some snacks, and just got a chance to talk. The photo to the right is of Sylvia, David, and John sitting in Horton Plaza, an <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/a\/a3\/Escher%27s_Relativity.jpg\">M.C. Escher of a venue<\/a> if I ever saw one. Very cool.<\/p>\n<p>As David&#8217;s already <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dedalvs\/status\/24378146853756928\">tweeted<\/a>, this was a fantastic day. Not only did I get to hang out with some quintessential conlangers, <em>two<\/em> recipients of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dedalvs.conlang.org\/smileys\/\">Smiley Award<\/a> (and its originator), and the creator of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makinggameofthrones.com\/production-diary\/2010\/12\/15\/dothraki-101.html\">Dothraki<\/a>, but David, Sylvia, and John are some of the most personable, friendly, and interesting people I&#8217;ve had the opportunity to meet.
